The phrase 'Our reward in heaven is great' is suitable to use when acknowledging the work of volunteers serving the community. These individuals selflessly dedicate their time and effort without expecting any financial compensation. Despite this, their efforts are recognized and appreciated. For instance, the AIDS Care Community in Bener Village was honored with an award from a competition organized by the Office of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control of Yogyakarta City. What specific programs did the Bener AIDS Care Community implement that led to their success in this competition?
Bener is an urban village located in the Tegalrejo Subdistrict. The office is located on Bener Street No 48, Yogyakarta City. In Bener area, there is an AIDS Care group called 'BENSAE', which stands for Bener (true), Sehat (health), Amanah (trustworthy), and Empati (empathy).

Champion Final Stage (via Online)
BENSAE AIDS Care Community was initially formed as a collective of individuals deeply concerned about HIV and AIDS issues, which later evolved to encompass gender equality as well. While the AIDS Care Community is active in addressing HIV and AIDS challenges, they also champion the eradication of gender discrimination within the Bener area. Notably, Bener Urban Village is home to a diverse community, including elderly residents, children, and vulnerable groups such as scavengers, buskers, beggars, and transwomen, all of whom encounter various obstacles and hardships.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) cases are often a hotly discussed issue. Transwomen are one of the transgender. People reject the existence of transwomen in their neighbourhood, even their family members. Society believes that men and women behave differently and have different responsibilities in life.
Society expects women to act in a feminine way, compassionate, and kind manner. Besides, men, act fierce, manly, and capable of leading women. Transgender women's existence is undoubtedly not what society expects of them. Transgender women's lives are associated with violence and deviant behaviour.
Transgender women encounter numerous challenges, with low self-esteem stemming from familial rejection being the most significant. Additionally, the limited opportunities for socializing with the broader community often prompt transwomen to seek solace and support within their own community to mitigate potential rejection.
Similarly, family members frequently overlook their older relatives. The elderly are not taken care of or placed in nursing homes because their children are too busy working or because their relatives live far away from the city or overseas. Furthermore, some elderly rely on the support of their local community to meet their daily needs because they don't have relatives nearby.
There are also children whose parents are scavengers. This phenomenon also automatically made the children scavengers, even though they were still in school and should receive an education like other children their age.
Through regular meetings, the BENSAE AIDS Care Community, consisting of concerned citizens, strives to enhance the community and is driven to assist by establishing connections with relevant parties. This has also inspired the BENSAE AIDS Care Community to participate in the Gender Champion competition of the Yogyakarta City Office of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, Population Control, and Family Planning.
The Gender Champion Award is given to individuals who are dedicated to promoting gender justice and equality in Yogyakarta. They work to enhance the quality of life for women, children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those experiencing poverty. These champions collaborate with various groups to advance gender equality and justice.
Yogyakarta City Office of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, Population Control, and Family Planning's Gender held the Gender Champion Selection to recognize individuals, communities/groups, business actors, Regional Apparatus Organizations, and Civil Servants who care about the development and progress of gender mainstreaming and contribute the realization of gender equality in Yogyakarta. Interested participants can register through the link provided by the committee.
Natalita Indriyati (Indri), a spokesperson for BENSAE AIDS Care Community, mentioned that since joining the community, she has become more involved in gender issues because CD Bethesda YAKKUM is also addressing them. Indri gained knowledge about gender through her participation in various activities. She joined the AIDS Care Community and had many positive experiences.
With intention and determination, the BENSAE AIDS Care Community was motivated to participate in the Gender Champion competition organized by the Yogyakarta City Government. The BENSAE AIDS Care Community then registered and downloaded the form containing their group’s identity.
After filling out all the necessary forms, BENSAE AIDS Care Community had to wait for 1-2 weeks before receiving an invitation to participate in an interview with the competition judges. Finally, all the effort they put in paid off, as BENSAE AIDS Care Community was selected as the winner of the 2023 Gender Champion in the Community Category.

The Representative of BENSAE AIDS Care Community Received the Award
"This award is a surprise for us because we have always carried out our activities with joy, without feeling burdened, and without expecting anything in return," Indri stated. "The existence of BENSAE AIDS Care Community must be able to play a role as a driving force for gender equality and inclusion. It helps to create a safer and more supportive environment for individuals with diverse gender and sexual identities by educating teenagers, young people, religious leaders, and community leaders about gender issues."
Indri hopes that BENSAE AIDS Care Community can continue to help raise awareness and understanding, reduce negative stereotypes, and avoid gender discrimination.
