Aceh, officially known as Nangroe Aceh Darussalam, is one part of Indonesia that has become well known around the world. This is not only because of the 30-year armed conflict between the Free Aceh Movement (rebel group seeking an Inde-pendent Aceh also known as Gam) and the Indonesian government, but also be-cause of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that unleashed the devastating December 26th 2004 tsunami.

Prior to the tsunami, Kuala Bubon was a lively fishing village that was mostly in-sulated from economic and political storms affecting the rest of mainland Suma-tra. After the tsunami all 939 inhabitants of Kuala Bubon were displaced and 221 were killed. All homes and public facilities, including schools and clinics, were ei-ther destroyed or damaged. Still today, 60-100 meters of coastland remains sunken underwater. Diseases such as Malaria, Anaemia, Dengue, diarrhoea, up-per respiratory infections, Dyspepsia, Dermatitis became major health issues.

On a whole, the tsunami disaster killed approximately 170,000 Indonesians and left over half a million Acehnese people (commonly known as Tanah Rencong) homeless.  The Aceh province, with five local districts and one city administrative district (Banda Aceh), once had a land area of approximately 19,000 square km. This was reduced nearly 20% by the tsunami, particularly in coastal areas. Over 50% of public health facilities were destroyed, forcing survivors to depend on outside aid while they struggled to put their lives back together.

The tsunami disaster has been a motivating factor towards political peace in the region. In August 2005, Gam separatists signed a peace deal prom-ising disarmament and government withdrawal and in December 2006 the first direct elections were held, electing former separatist rebel leader Irwandi Yusuf (formerly imprisoned on treason charges) as mayor.

As of 2007-2008, focus rehabilitation program was on supplying clean water and sanitation, health clinics and professional health workers, building permanent housing, and returning boats and other infrastructure to facilitate a return to previous employment and life-sustaining work. The early warning system and building was also constructed for Kuala Bubon people.
