Geographically, West Nusa Tenggara Province consists of Lombok and Sumbawa islands. In contrast to its close tourist-flocking Western neighbour Bali, Lombok remains one of Indonesia’s poorest regions. In 2005, cases of busung lapar (mal-nutrition) were exposed to the mass media, increasing public concern and atten-tion to this province. There were 3,393 malnutrition cases, 1,666 sufferers of marasmus; 37 cases of kwarshiorkor; 20 cases of marasmus kwarshiorkor; and the child death rate is approximately 125.

The corruption crime rate of local officials is very high so that health funds for the poor are not satisfactorily distributed. The biggest documented crime was com-mitted by 12 local representatives of West Nusa Tenggara parliament. It is pre-sumed that the budget was corrupted to the amount of 24 billion Rupiah from 2001-2002.

By the end of 2004, the poverty level was 25.38% and people suffering from malnutrition measured about 35%. These problems face huge obstacles because the ratio of doctors to population is only 1:8,609. Due to West Nusa Tenggara’s relatively low rainfall, clean drinking water is also a major concern. Sanitation in-stallation, healthy environment advocacy, and communicable disease control re-quires immediate attention from the local government and concerned NGOs.
