Central Java Province is one of six provinces on Java. Comprised of 29 rural dis-tricts (called regencies) and six urban cities, the Central Province comprises ap-proximately 25% of the total landmass and population of the island. Flooding, landslides, drought, food crisis, and poor access to healthcare are constant prob-lems. In the districts of Grobogan, Pati, Demak and other areas for example, the ratio between doctors and the population is 1:30.000, far from the ideal ratio of 1:5,000. Each district has an average of 2-3 hospitals and 18-25 Puskesmas (health centers). This is not enough to meet the requirements of the community as the total population which can be covered by these health services is only 13.012.397, or 40.60%.

As its neighboring province Yogyakarta, the spread of HIV/AIDS, STDs, and en-demic diseases like malaria and dengue, are still major problems. 3 cases of deadly bird flu have also been reported in the region.

On social and political aspect, Central Java remains prone to conflict, especially during general and local elections. These minor conflicts need to be monitored because protesters often attack and destroy public infrastructure, including health care facilities, which ultimately affects communities at the local level.
