Papua, known as Cendrawasih Island, is complete with its own uniqueness. Not only does it have a conserved indigenous community culture with a deeply rooted tribalist system, but it also has a beautiful natural environment that includes the snow-covered Jaya Wijaya mountain. Unfortunately, Papuan people are still wrestling with the reality of poverty which, in 2004, was more than 38%, affecting 988,600 people. Due to its natural envi-ronment, most of the population is made up of scarce hill tribes that do not have agricultural plantations or knowledge about the economic value of cultivating a variety of crops. There is a huge natural potential for growing crops but unfortu-nately, they lack innovative improvements in farming and plantation systems. In addition, seed and fertilizer costs are high because it has to be imported from other provinces, thus reducing the potential yield further.

People’s knowledge regarding healthy attitudes and lifestyle is also limited. This is reflected in the high number of HIV/AIDS cases found in Papua. As of December 30, 2004, we found a total 1,706 cases: 657 cases in Merauke, 592 cases in Timika, 141 cases in Kota Jayapura, 121 cases in Sorong, 78 cases in Nabire, and 57 cases in Jayapura Regency. Respiratory infections, Malaria, diarrhoea, dysen-tery, intestinal worms, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (GO and Syphilis), Pneu-monia, and Rheumatic are the consequential illnesses of the hilly terrain, ice-rain, un-healthy housing pattern called Honai), and lack of clean water management.

Through Health, Agriculture, and AIDS program in Papua, CD Bethesda together with People Organization facilitate holistic health service based on Papua indigenous local wisdom towards self-reliance community in solving ba-sic health problem.
