Maternal and Children Health Program

Malnutrition is a problem often found in Indonesia, especially in rural, remote communities.  It is most often caused by flooding during the rainy season, and longer-than-normal dry seasons, both of which can lead to poor harvests.  Unfor-tunately, those who are malnourished tend to be more susceptible to other dis-eases.  CD Bethesda’s supplementary feeding programs mainly target those who are most vulnerable to malnutrition:  young children (toddlers), lactating moth-ers, the elderly, and also those recovering from tuberculosis.  Food is most often distributed through specialized health centers called Posyandu, which focus on the health of children and the elderly.  The effectiveness of the nutritional sup-plements is gauged by monthly monitoring of the children’s weight and health.  Nutritional supplements usually consist of milk and mung beans, as well as some-times other staple foods, especially in times of emergency or disaster.
