Community Organizing and Capacity Building

 CD Bethesda’s programs could not be as successful as they are without the participation of People Organizations (POs). The establishment of the first People Organization evolved from just a small group of village health cadres. Recognizing that this group could serve as a much needed conduit to reaching the entire community, CD Bethesda enhanced their management and community organizing abilities through organization management and capacity building trainings. Repeating this pattern in villages and communities throughout Indonesia has created an important network of skilled organizers who can help implement and later sustain the healthcare programs developed by CD Bethesda. With this achievement in place, it is hoped that People Organizations can eventually grow into self-standing local organizations with a clear vision, strong management structure and maximized capacity to resolve the basic problems facing society.
In addition to delivering health services in their respective areas, the POs build networks and develop their capacity for advocacy skills in the health sector. They strive to solve the problem of lack of justice in the health sector’s public policy. For example, the govern-ment has decided to reduce the budget for expenses related to health facilities and ser-vices, which has a very negative impact on the quality of said facilities and services, par-ticularly in remote communities. As a result, the number of malnourishment cases has increased, and many children have died due to starvation. The POs and their networks have taken the initiative to bring this issue to the attention of the government, insisting that the government seriously consider this phenomenon. Their goal is to change health sector policies to support the poor community.
