Seed Capital Support for Small Entrepreneurs

There are often not sufficient economic opportunities for people in the urban and rural villages served by CD Bethesda, or for those affected by natural disasters.  Many times residents would like to start or expand businesses, but they need capital and are unable to find local funding or unable to qualify for bank loans.  CD Bethesda’s programs in micro credit are run to provide villages with the tools needed to start successful, autonomous credit unions capable of distancing village residents from poverty and giving them the economic independence they desire. Micro credits, or small grant programs, are provided for economic rehabilitation for disaster affected communities.  These programs include training in credit un-ion management and operation, given for those interested in running the local credit unions, and provision of capital to get the credit unions started.   Loans are provided for becak drivers, farmers, those who run small restaurants or kiosks, etc, and the loans are generally paid back over a period of months with an af-fordable interest rate.  Though CD Bethesda provides the initial credit union capi-tal, the goal is for the credit unions to achieve economic independence, increasing their funds through interest paid by those who borrow money.
