Clean water supply and Sanitation

When people consume water that is not clean, or do not employ healthy sanita-tion practices, they leave themselves more vulnerable to diseases such as hepati-tis A, tuberculosis, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and diarrhea.  CD Bethesda therefore considers initiatives in water and sanitation to be vital elements of their programs to improve the health of people in rural communities.  In order to en-sure that the served communities have year-round access to sufficient amounts of clean water, CD Bethesda provides training in water management, and helps the people to build wells, water pipe systems, rainwater collection tanks, and shelters to protect natural springs. Convenient access to clean water is especially beneficial for the women in the villages, as they are responsible for obtaining clean water for their families, and sometimes must walk for hours to reach water sites.   With easier water access, these women have more time to pursue eco-nomic activities, such as making handicrafts or running home-based businesses.

Good sanitation practices also play an important part in decreasing the incidence of disease in the villages, as many people in remote communities habitually bathe in water that is used for cooking/drinking or relieve themselves in non-designated areas.  CD Bethesda’s sanitation programs provide training in good sanitation practices, and also assistance for the building of public bathing and toilet facili-ties.
