Village Medicine Post and Local Training

The principle issue faced by village and remote communities in Indonesia is the very mi-nimal existence of health facilities such as Puskesmas (government health clinics) and Posyandu (special health centers for children and the elderly).  Communities, especially those far from health care access, need these facilities to increase their members’ quality of life.  Due to mismanagement, which is especially prevalent in eastern Indonesia, many Puskesmas or other health service facilities do not operate optimally.  They lack commitment to providing quality health services, and also lack operational funding, due to government corruption.  Unfortunately, improving the health clinics does not seem to be a top priority for the government.

Given the above, it is clear that communities in remote areas need their own privately-run village medicine posts.  CD Bethesda facilitates the establishment of village medicine posts, staffed by local health cadres that have undergone CD Bethesda’s basic health care and management training.  These local cadres carry out health campaigns in addition to providing health services.  CD Bethesda supplies medicine for the village health posts based on diseases found in the community, and also provides guidelines for medicine use.  The goal is that after a certain amount of subsidy from CD Bethesda, the village health posts will be able to use their income from treating patients to become self-reliant, providing accessible health care and medicines (often both traditional and alternative) for people in rural villages and the surrounding areas.  Our hope is for village health posts to become first aid and health information centers, empowering rural villages to manage their own health care, reducing the prevalence of treatable disease, and ensuring that community members’ right to basic health care is fulfilled.
